Games, Sports and Musical Instruments in French

When you say that you play a game, sport or instrument in French, you can use the verb "jouer".

Here is how we use it with different subjects at present.

JOUER (The pronunciation only changes for nous and vous)

Je joue (I play)

Tu joues  (You play)

Il/elle/on joue (He, she, one plays)

Nous jouons (We play)

Vous jouez (You, plural/sing. formal play)

Ils/elles jouent (They play)

 

However, a different preposition (à, de) is required depending on the activity. 

Jouer à (to play a game/sport)

Jouer à is used with games and sports.

For example:

• Nous jouerons aux échecs ce soir. (We will play chess tonight)
• Tu joues au hockey? (Do you play hockey?)

 

* The contraction with the following articles is required:

à + les (plural nouns) > aux (échecs)

à + le (sing./masc. nouns) > au (hockey)

 

Here are some games in French:

Games are usually plural in French; however there are some singular games such as "le billard" (pool). 

Les échecs (chess) > jouer aux échecs

Les jeux de société (board games) > jouer aux jeux de société

Les jeux vidéo (video games) > jouer aux jeux vidéo

Les jeux de carte (card games) > jouer aux jeux de carte

Le billard  (pool) > jouer au billard 

And some sports:

Sports in French are very similar to English and they are usually masculin.

Le golf (golf) > jouer au golf 

Le foot(ball) (soccer) > jouer au foot(ball)

Le basket (basketball) > jouer au basket

Le hockey (hockey) > jouer au hockey

Le tennis (tennis) > jouer au tennis

Le baseball (baseball) > jouer au baseball

Le volley(ball) (volleyball) > jouer au volleyball

Jouer de (to play an instrument) 

Jouer de is used with musical instruments. 

Here are some examples:

• Elle joue de la guitare. (She plays the guitar)
• Je joue du piano depuis dix ans. (I have been playing the piano for ten years.)

 

* The contraction with the following articles is required:

de+ le (sing./masc. nouns) > du (piano)

de + des (plural nouns) > des 

Here are some musical instruments in French:

La flûte (Flute) > jouer de la flûte

Le violon (violin) > jouer du violon

Le saxophone (saxophone) > jouer du saxophone

La guitare (guitar) > jouer de la guitare 

Le piano (piano) > jouer du piano

La trompette (trumpet) > jouer de la trompette 

La batterie (drums) > jouer de la batterie
