How to Study for TEF Canada During Summer Break

Summer is here! While it’s tempting to take a full break from studying, the warmer months are actually a great time to prepare for the TEF Canada exam, especially if you want to take the test in the fall or winter.

Here are some realistic, flexible ways to stay on track with your French this summer without sacrificing your vacation.

1. Set a Summer-Friendly Routine

Instead of daily study marathons, try a lighter but consistent plan.
For example:

-15 minutes of listening or reading in the morning

-30 minutes of focused practice 3x a week

-1 hour every weekend to review and practice a full TEF section

You don’t need to do everything, focus on one skill at a time (like improving your writing or listening).

2. Turn Summer Fun into French Input

Use your downtime to absorb French naturally:

-Listen to podcasts while walking or commuting

-Watch light summer shows or YouTube videos in French

-Switch your phone or Netflix to French

Even passive exposure trains your brain to recognize patterns and pronunciation, essential for TEF listening and oral sections.

3. Keep a Simple French Journal

Summer is full of little experiences so why not write about them in French?

Example prompts:

-Qu’est-ce que tu as fait ce week-end ?

-Quel est ton plat préféré de l’été ?

-Où veux-tu voyager en août ?

This builds your vocabulary, sentence structure, and confidence, especially for the writing section (expression écrite).

4. Use Mobile-Friendly Study Tools

Heading to the cottage? On the road?

Pack light but study smart:

-Use apps like Quizlet to review vocabulary

-Try our TEF preparation course on your tablet or phone

-Practice sample speaking questions by recording yourself

Learning on-the-go can actually help you focus more — short bursts > long sessions!

5. Focus on Your Timeline

Summer is the perfect moment to think about your immigration or test goals.

Ask yourself:

-When do I want to take the TEF exam?

-What section do I struggle with most?

-What would help me feel more prepared?

Set one goal and build your summer around it. Small steps now = big results by fall
