Learning French can feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to memorize dozens (or hundreds!) of new words each week.
But here’s the good news: memorizing vocabulary doesn’t have to be slow or boring.
In fact, with the right techniques, you can make new words stick faster and stay longer in your memory.
Here are 3 proven strategies that I teach my students, especially those preparing for the TEF Canada exam 👇
1. Use Words in Real Sentences
Don’t just memorize isolated words, learn them in context.
For example:
Instead of just learning “acheter” (to buy), use it in a sentence:
👉 Je veux acheter une nouvelle voiture.
Why it works:
✔️ Helps you remember word order and grammar
✔️ Gives meaning to each word
✔️ Easier to recall during speaking or writing
🎯 Tip: Write your own example sentences using new vocabulary every week or say them out loud and record yourself!

2. Use Spaced Repetition (Not Cramming!)
Spaced repetition is a smart memory technique where you review words just before you’re about to forget them.
Apps like Anki or Quizlet use this system to help you:
-Review vocab at regular intervals
-Strengthen long-term memory
-Avoid wasting time reviewing what you already know
🎯 Tip: Create your own flashcards or use a pre-made TEF vocabulary deck and review for 5–10 minutes a day.
3. Group Words by Theme (Not Alphabet)
Trying to memorize a random list of words is like trying to build a puzzle without a picture.
Instead, group words by:
-🛒 Topic (e.g. food, travel, work)
-👪 Situation (e.g. visiting the doctor, ordering coffee)
-🧠 Grammar type (verbs, adjectives, nouns)
This helps your brain make connections and improves recall during the exam.
🎯 Tip: Create mind maps or word clusters for each unit you study.

Bonus: Speak It or Forget It!
This isn’t one of the three techniques but it’s important:
If you don’t say the words out loud, you’re more likely to forget them.
🎤 Practise speaking with:
-Yourself (yes, really!)
-A study partner
-Your teacher during class
-Voice recordings and playback
Saying the words helps you internalize their pronunciation and usage.
