If you want to talk about past or continuos actions, and describe the time, you can use "depuis" or "il y a ".
Let's look at these examples:
- Depuis 2017, mes parents passent l'été à Montréal. (Since 2017, my parents have been spending summers in Montréal.)
- Il y a une heure, j'étais chez moi. (An hour ago, I was home)
Depuis (For/ Since)
Depuis describes an action that started in the past and is still going on at the moment of speaking. It's usually used in the present tense.
For example:
- Je travaille dans cette compagnie depuis deux ans. (I've been working in this company for two years.)
- Je suis très heureux depuis mon arrivé. (I've been very happy since my arrival.)
When you refer to an even, you can use "depuis que". This expression is only used with clauses.
For example:
Depuis que j'habite au centre ville, je sors beaucoup. (Ever since I live in downtown, I'm going out a lot.)
***When you talk about the past actions, you can also use "depuis".
For example:
- J'étais malade depuis mon arrivé. (I'd been sick since my arrival.)
Il y a (Ago)
Il y a describes actions that started and completed in the past. It's usually used in the past tense.
For example:
- J'ai diné il y a deux heures. (I had a dinner two hours ago.)
- Nous étions à la plage il y a une semaine. (We were at the beach a week ago.)
*** Il y a is usually used with periods of time such as minute, heure, semaine, mois, an, etc.
