The verbs savoir and connaître in French

The verbs savoir and connaître both mean -to know. However, they are used in différents contexts. 

Savoir

Savoir means to know how to do something. It's followed by an infinitive.

For example:

• Je sais parler français. (I know how to speak French)
• Sais-tu cuisiner? (Do you know how to cook?)
• Elles ne savent pas jouer aux échecs. (They don't know how to play chess.)

Savoir means to know facts. In this case, it's followed by a clause such as que.

For example:

• Je sais que tu n'aimes pas le thé. (I know that you don't like tea)
• Est-ce que ta mère sait que tu es ici? (Do your mom know that you are here?) 

Connaître

Connaître means to know or be familiar with a person, place or thing. It's followed by a noun.

• Tu connais ce magasin? (Do you know this store?)
• Je connais cette chanteuse. (I know this singer)

***The verb connaître is never followed by an infinitive.
