How to Improve Your TEF Canada Score: The Study Routine That Actually Works

Preparing for the TEF Canada can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re aiming for CLB 7, the level required by many immigration programs. But the truth is: you don’t need to study 5 hours a day. You just need a smart, structured routine that focuses on the skills that matter most.

In this article, you’ll discover a simple weekly study plan that my students use to make real progress – even if they have a busy schedule.

1. Understand What CLB 7 Really Means

Before diving into exercises, you need a clear target.
CLB 7 is NOT “perfect French.” It’s about being able to:

-communicate clearly in familiar situations,

-describe experiences, preferences and habits,

-give simple opinions,

-understand the main ideas in conversations and texts.

Once students realise that CLB 7 is achievable, their confidence grows – and their progress accelerates.

2. Build a Weekly Routine You Can Actually Follow

Here is the 4-day plan I give to my TEF students:

Day 1 — Listening Practice (30 minutes)

Focus on short, real-life audios:

-weather reports

-radio announcements

-short interviews

Listen twice:
1st time → general idea
2nd time → details (numbers, dates, opinions)

Day 2 — Speaking Practice (20–30 minutes)

Record yourself answering following questions:

-Parlez-moi de votre routine.

-Décrivez une expérience récente.

-Donnez votre opinion sur…

Most students improve simply by hearing themselves speak.

Day 3 — Grammar Refresh (20 minutes)

Only review the essentials:

-passé composé vs imparfait

-futur proche / futur simple

-conditionnel pour être poli

-structures to justify an opinion

No need for advanced theory.

Day 4 — Writing Practice (30 minutes)

Write a short email or argumentation following the TEF format.
Focus on:

-clarity

-simple vocabulary

-short sentences

This routine alone can raise your level fast.

3. Practise With Real TEF Tasks

Studying French is great, but TEF requires strategy.
You need to practise tasks that look exactly like the exam:

-timed listening

-structured oral responses

-emails with required elements

-opinion texts with 2 arguments

This trains your reflexes and reduces stress on exam day.

4. Don’t Study Alone

Most students make progress, but they get stuck around CLB 5 because:

-they practise with no feedback

-they use random resources

-they don’t know their weak points

Working with a teacher or structured course helps you stay consistent and correct your mistakes early.
